Carinotetraodon

Carinotetraodon is a genus of small freshwater pufferfish belonging to the family Tetraodontidae. These fish are native to Southeast Asia, primarily found in brackish and freshwater environments in countries like Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. The most well-known species within this genus is Carinotetraodon lorteti, commonly referred to as the red-eye puffer or Malabar puffer.

These pufferfish are characterized by their relatively small size, typically not exceeding 10-15 centimeters in length. They possess the characteristic ability of pufferfish to inflate their bodies with water or air when threatened, making them appear much larger and deterring predators. Their coloration can vary, but often includes intricate patterns of spots, stripes, and sometimes iridescent hues. The red-eye puffer, as its name suggests, often has prominent red irises.

In their natural habitat, Carinotetraodon species are carnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates, mollusks, and crustaceans. In captivity, their diet should reflect this, consisting of a variety of meaty foods such as shrimp, mussels, and specialized pufferfish pellets. Their care requires a well-maintained aquarium with good water quality, as they can be sensitive to ammonia and nitrite.

Carinotetraodon species are generally solitary and can exhibit territorial behavior, especially towards other pufferfish or similarly shaped fish. Therefore, they are often best kept individually or in carefully selected, compatible tank mates. Breeding in captivity is possible but can be challenging. The genus is of interest to aquarists for its unique appearance and interesting behavior, though their specific care requirements necessitate knowledgeable owners.
