Caperuza

Caperuza is a hood or hooded part of a garment that covers the head and often the neck, typically attached to a cloak, cape, or robe. It may be a separate piece that can be worn over or under other outerwear, or an integral part of the garment.

Etymology and usage: The term derives from older Spanish forms related to cappe, cape, and is documented in medieval and early modern texts. In contemporary Spanish, caperuza is used mainly in historical, literary, or costume contexts, while capucha is common for everyday hoods.

Historically, caperuzas appeared in Europe as a practical feature for warmth and weather protection and as a decorative or ceremonial element in outerwear, cloaks, and religious or elite garments. The shape varies from conical to rounded and may include fur linings or embroidery.

Cultural references: In folklore, the hood of Little Red Riding Hood is called a caperuza in Spanish, and "La caperucita roja" is the familiar tale. The term is also invoked in discussions of costume design and historical dress.

Today, caperuza survives mainly in historical descriptions, costume contexts, and literary discussions; in everyday speech caperuza is often supplanted by capucha.
