Calakmul
Calakmul is an ancient Maya city located in the southern part of the Yucatán Peninsula, in the state of Campeche, Mexico. It lies within the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve and is one of the largest and most important classic-period Maya locales, flourishing roughly during the six centuries around AD 500–900. The modern name Calakmul comes from the local Maya language; the ancient name of the city is not well known from surviving inscriptions.
