CO2blussers

CO2blussers, also known as carbon dioxide extinguishers, are portable devices that discharge compressed liquid carbon dioxide to suppress fires. When released, CO2 blankets the fire, displacing oxygen and interrupting the combustion process. The discharge is cold and creates a dense white cloud, which can obscure vision while active.

These extinguishers are especially suited to electrical fires and some types of liquid fires, and they leave no corrosive residue that could damage sensitive equipment. They are commonly used on electrical panels, data centers, laboratories, and offices with computer equipment. They are not effective for fires involving ordinary combustibles such as wood or paper, and they should not be relied upon for metal (Class D) fires. They should not be used in occupied spaces without evacuation or adequate ventilation, because the rapid oxygen depletion can cause suffocation.

CO2 extinguishers come in sizes from about 2 kg to 10 kg, with smaller units most common for offices. They operate by pulling a safety pin and pressing the lever to release the gas through a nozzle. After use, the unit must be recharged or replaced, and periodic inspection and hydrostatic testing are required by safety regulations.

The main advantages are fast knock-down action with no residue and suitability for electrical fires. The main limitations are short discharge duration, lack of cooling effect, potential eye irritation from the plume, and risk of asphyxiation in confined spaces. CO2 is a greenhouse gas, but extinguishers are single-use or rechargeable devices; proper disposal and servicing should follow local regulations.
