CLSEM

CLSEM, which stands for Continuous Localized Surface Emission Microscopy, is a scientific imaging technique used to visualize and study the dynamic behavior of surfaces at a very high resolution. It allows researchers to observe phenomena occurring on a nanometer scale, such as the emission of particles or the formation of nanostructures in real-time.

The core principle behind CLSEM involves a combination of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and controlled electron beam stimulation. A finely focused electron beam is used to scan the surface of a sample. Simultaneously, a secondary, localized electron beam is employed to induce specific surface processes. By carefully controlling the energy and position of this stimulating beam, scientists can trigger and observe localized events as they happen. The emitted secondary electrons or other signals generated by these events are then detected and used to construct an image.

This technique is particularly useful for studying a variety of surface-related phenomena. These can include surface diffusion, the kinetics of chemical reactions occurring on surfaces, the growth of thin films, and the emission of electrons or ions from specific surface sites. CLSEM offers advantages in that it can provide both high spatial resolution and temporal information, making it a powerful tool for understanding nanoscale surface dynamics that are difficult to observe with conventional microscopy. Applications span fields like materials science, catalysis, and semiconductor research.
