CBSE stands for the Central Board of Secondary Education, a national-level education board in India. Established in 1962 by the Government of India, its purpose is to standardize secondary and higher secondary education and to conduct final examinations for affiliated schools. The abbreviation is commonly used in the singular, while CBSEs may be encountered when referring to the board’s regional offices or to the multiple examinations it administers.

CBSE oversees thousands of schools both within India and in a growing number of international locations. Affiliated schools agree to follow the board’s policies, syllabus, and assessment procedures, and to align with NCERT textbooks in many subjects. The board works with NCERT to develop the curriculum and provides guidance on teacher training, examinations, and school accreditation.

Administration and governance are provided by a central governing body under the Ministry of Education. The board is headed by a chairperson and supported by regional offices that coordinate with affiliated schools.
