Børsteteknikkene, or brushing techniques, refer to the various methods used to clean teeth and maintain oral hygiene. Proper brushing is crucial for removing plaque, food debris, and preventing cavities and gum disease. Different techniques exist, each with its own emphasis on efficacy and gentleness.

The Bass method, also known as the sulcular brushing technique, is widely recommended by dentists. It involves angling the toothbrush bristles at a 45-degree angle towards the gum line and using short, gentle, circular or back-and-forth strokes. This technique effectively cleans the areas between the teeth and just below the gum line, where plaque tends to accumulate.

Another common technique is the Modified Bass method, which adds a sweeping motion away from the gum line after the initial sulcular cleaning. This helps to remove dislodged plaque from the tooth surface. The Fones technique, often taught to children, uses a simple circular motion with the brush held perpendicular to the tooth surface, making it easy to learn and execute.

When brushing, it is important to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Brushing should be done for at least two minutes, covering all surfaces of the teeth: outer, inner, and chewing surfaces. Gentle pressure should be applied to avoid damaging the gums and tooth enamel. After brushing, the tongue should also be cleaned to remove bacteria that can cause bad breath. Regular and correct application of these brushing techniques contributes significantly to overall oral health.
