Bygningsmetaller

Bygningsmetaller are skilled tradespersons who work with metal in construction projects. They plan, fabricate and install metal components for buildings, including sheet metal, metal façades, roofing, gutters, flashing, stairs, railings and other architectural or structural elements. The work often involves both production in workshops and installation on construction sites, sometimes in collaboration with carpenters, plumbers and electricians.

Typical tasks include shaping and cutting metal, bending and welding, assembling components, and mounting finished elements into buildings. Bygningsmetaller must read technical drawings and specifications, select appropriate materials (such as steel, aluminum or copper), and ensure components meet quality and safety requirements. They may work with a range of processes, including riveting, welding (MIG/TIG), drilling, and the use of specialized metalworking machinery and hand tools. In many projects they also perform maintenance, metering and adjustments of installed metal systems.

Subspecialties within the field include blikkenslager (sheet metal worker), who handles roofing, gutters and flashing; metal façades and cladding installers; and structural metal workers who fabricate and install supports, staircases and railings. The work can be physically demanding and is performed in varied environments, from workshops to outdoor construction sites, often under time constraints and weather exposure. Safety training and adherence to building regulations are essential.

Training and qualifications typically involve vocational education and an apprenticeship program leading to a fagbrev (trade certificate) in a related bygningsmetall field. Career paths may lead to senior craft roles, supervision, or roles in fabrication shops, project management or design support within the construction industry.
