Butterflysvømning, commonly known as butterfly stroke in English, is one of the four competitive swimming strokes recognized by international swimming federations. It is characterized by its undulating, wave-like motion, which distinguishes it from other strokes. The stroke is known for its technical complexity and the significant physical demand it places on swimmers, particularly in terms of strength and endurance.

In butterflysvømning, the swimmer propels themselves through the water using simultaneous arm movements and a dolphin kick. The arms move in a circular motion, entering the water shoulder-first, pulling back, and then pushing forward in a powerful stroke. This motion is synchronized with a flutter kick, where the legs move in a continuous, undulating motion resembling a dolphin’s tail. Swimmers must time their breath carefully, typically exhaling underwater and lifting their heads to inhale as their arms recover above the water.
