Busser

A busser, also known as a busboy or busgirl, is an entry-level position in the food service industry. The primary role of a busser is to support the waitstaff and kitchen staff by clearing and cleaning tables, assisting with guest needs, and maintaining the overall cleanliness of the dining area.

Key responsibilities include removing used dishes, silverware, glassware, and linens from tables after guests have finished their meals. Bussers are also responsible for wiping down tables and chairs, resetting tables with fresh linens and cutlery, and ensuring the dining room floor is free of debris. They often refill water glasses, bring bread baskets, and may assist in delivering food or clearing plates upon request.

In addition to table maintenance, bussers play a role in maintaining the restaurant's aesthetic. This can involve polishing silverware, restocking server stations with essentials like napkins and condiments, and ensuring restrooms are clean and well-supplied. They often work closely with servers, anticipating needs and ensuring a smooth flow of service. Strong communication skills and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment are essential for success in this role. Bussing is often considered a stepping stone to other positions within the restaurant industry, such as server or bartender.
