The term comes from the Norwegian words bruker (user) and rettet (aimed at, oriented toward). In practice, brukerrettede work emphasizes understanding who the users are, what they need to accomplish, and how they interact with a product or service.

Key characteristics include systematized user research, participatory or co-design, usability and accessibility considerations, and iterative prototyping with ongoing feedback. Common methods are interviews, surveys, personas, journey maps, usability testing, and accessibility assessments aligned with standards such as WCAG. The aim is to create solutions that are intuitive, efficient, and inclusive for diverse users.

Brukerrettede approaches are applied across sectors, including information technology, product design, health care, and public services. They align with related concepts such as user-centered design, human-centered design, and user experience design, while sometimes emphasizing different aspects like usability, usefulness, or satisfaction.

Benefits include higher adoption rates, reduced support costs, and better user satisfaction and productivity. Challenges include balancing user needs with business constraints, ensuring data privacy, and avoiding overemphasis on typical users at the expense of minority groups.
