Typical features include a soft cover or flexible binding, multiple pages, and a combination of text and images. They are usually saddle-stitched or glued, and commonly produced in sizes such as A5 or A4. Paper quality ranges from economical coated stock to higher-grade matte or glossy finishes.

Contents vary from product descriptions and service specifications to corporate profiles, tutorials, and event programs. A brochure is designed to inform and persuade, often accompanied by pricing, schedules, or diagrams. Different subtypes exist, including product brochures, corporate or institutional brochures, and event programs; a "Prospekt" typically emphasizes marketing, while a "Katalog" lists many items in detail.

Production and distribution methods reflect purpose and budget. They are produced via offset or digital printing and can be distributed at sales points, fairs, mailings, or online as PDFs or interactive files. Modern practice often combines a printed brochure with a digital version for broader reach.

While still common, brochures increasingly exist alongside websites and other media as part of integrated communications. They remain a flexible format for concise, image-supported information and are valued for their portability and tangible presence.
