Brandberg

Brandberg is the highest mountain in Namibia, standing at 2,573 meters (8,442 feet) above sea level. Located in the Namib Desert in the Erongo Region, it is a prominent inselberg, a solitary mountain rising abruptly from a plain. The Brandberg massif is roughly circular, with a diameter of approximately 25 kilometers, and is composed of granite. Its summit is known as Königstein.

The mountain is renowned for its rich rock art, particularly the White Lady painting, which is found in the Maack Shelter. These ancient artworks, created by San hunter-gatherers, offer insights into the beliefs and daily life of early inhabitants of the region. The Brandberg is considered a sacred site by the local Damara people.

Due to its elevation and proximity to the coast, Brandberg experiences a unique microclimate that supports a surprising diversity of life, including endemic plant and animal species. Despite its arid surroundings, ephemeral rivers can flow on its slopes after rainfall. The mountain's stark beauty and historical significance make it a popular destination for hikers, climbers, and archaeologists. Access to the Brandberg is generally managed, with guided tours often recommended for visitors.
