Braillenäyttöjen, also known as refreshable braille displays, are assistive technology devices that allow visually impaired individuals to read digital text. These devices translate electronic braille into a tactile format that can be felt with the fingertips. Unlike static braille, which is printed on paper, braille displays use a series of pins that can be raised or lowered to form braille characters on demand.

The fundamental principle behind a braille display is a matrix of braille cells. Each cell typically contains eight pins, which are individually controlled by electronic actuators. When text is sent to the display, software on a connected computer or mobile device interprets the braille characters and instructs the pins to form the corresponding braille dots. This creates a line of braille text that the user can read by moving their fingers along it. Many braille displays have multiple lines, allowing for a more extensive reading experience.

Braille displays are typically connected to computers, smartphones, or tablets via USB or Bluetooth. They work in conjunction with screen reader software, such as JAWS, NVDA, or VoiceOver, which read out the on-screen content. The screen reader then sends the text to the braille display for tactile output. In addition to reading, many braille displays incorporate a braille keyboard, allowing users to input text by typing in braille. This bidirectional functionality makes braille displays powerful tools for both consumption and creation of digital content, enhancing accessibility for individuals who read braille.
