Blomsterbælter

Blomsterbælter, lit. flower belts, are strips of flowering vegetation planted along agricultural fields, road verges, or around properties to support biodiversity and provide ecosystem services. They are typically designed to be nectar- and pollen-rich, offering habitat and resources for a range of species while contributing to landscape structure and amenity.

They typically consist of perennial and annual native flowers that bloom at different times to provide nectar and pollen throughout the growing season. Widths vary from around 0.5 to 2 meters along field margins, sometimes wider in wildlife corridors. Species mixtures are chosen to suit local climate, soil, and pollinator needs, and may include wildflowers, grasses, and legumes.

Primary functions include creating habitat for pollinators (bees, hoverflies, butterflies), enhancing natural pest control by supporting beneficial insects, stabilizing banks and reducing soil erosion, and improving landscape aesthetics. They can also contribute to nutrient retention and microclimate regulation.

Management and establishment: installation as part of agri-environment schemes or landscape plans. Maintenance often involves limited or delayed mowing to allow flowering and seed set, and avoidance of broad-spectrum pesticides. Native or regionally adapted species are preferred. Depending on local regulation, they may require periodic reseeding.
