Blodcellelager

Blodcellelager, literally “blood cell storage” in Norwegian, refers to the systems, facilities, and procedures used to collect, test, process, store, and distribute blood components for transfusion and research. Facilities of this type are commonly called blood banks or transfusion services and operate within national health systems or hospital networks.

The main components stored are red blood cells, platelets, and plasma. Red blood cells are kept at 2–6°C and typically have a shelf life of up to about 42 days, depending on the collection method and additive solutions. Platelets are stored at 20–24°C with continuous gentle agitation and are generally suitable for 5 to 7 days. Plasma is frozen and stored at −18°C or colder, often for up to a year. In some programs, additional components or cryopreserved products are prepared for specific needs.

Processing includes donor screening for infectious diseases, blood typing (ABO and Rh) and compatibility testing, and measures such as leukoreduction and, where appropriate, pathogen reduction. Units are labeled with traceable identifiers to ensure safety, traceability, and the ability to perform recalls if necessary.

Storage and logistics require controlled environments with monitored temperatures, backup power, and alarm systems, plus inventory management to optimize supply and minimize waste. Quality control and regulatory compliance are central, with accreditation or licensing by national authorities and, in many regions, international bodies guiding practice through guidelines and standards.

Ethical and social aspects include voluntary, informed donation, donor safety, equitable access to blood products, and transparent policies for prioritization during shortages.
