The idea emphasizes that not all bits carry the same meaning or function, even when they share the same value.

Common categories of bitstyper include data bits, which carry the primary payload or information; control bits, which manage framing, synchronization, or addressing in a stream; and redundancy bits, such as parity bits or more advanced error-detecting and error-correcting codes. In more complex representations, bits can also be grouped by their function, such as sign bits in numeric formats, exponent and mantissa bits in floating-point numbers, or metadata bits used for formatting, timing, or protocol negotiation. Some discussions also recognize indicator or flag bits that signal status changes or mode selections.
