Bildeflyt

Bildeflyt is a user interface pattern used to display a sequence of images in a compact space. The term combines the Norwegian words bilde (image) and flyt (flow) and is commonly used to describe the mechanisms that let users browse through pictures, typically on websites, apps, and digital publications. It is closely related to the concepts of slideshows and carousels.

In practice, bildeflyt can take several forms. A simple slideshow presents one image at a time with next and previous controls. A carousel shows a row of images, sometimes with multiple visible at once and with wrap-around navigation. A coverflow or similar variation adds a 3D-like transition to give a sense of depth.

Typical components include a container that holds the slides, individual slide elements with images and optional captions, navigation controls (arrows or swipe gestures), and indicators for progress or position. Autoplay, pause on hover or focus, and responsive sizing are common options, with accessibility considerations such as keyboard operability and descriptive alt text.

Bildeflyt is widely used for product image galleries, photography portfolios, news image galleries, and social media feeds. It offers efficient use of space and can improve user engagement when well implemented, but overuse or poor performance can hinder usability, particularly on slower connections or small screens.

Best practices include limiting the number of slides, providing clear focus indicators, enabling keyboard and touch navigation, implementing lazy loading for off-screen images, and ensuring captions are concise and legible. Designers should weigh the trade-offs between visual appeal, speed, and accessibility based on the target audience.
