Besvärjelse

Besvärjelse is a term used in Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish to describe an incantation, charm, or spell intended to influence a person, a situation, or an object through the manipulation of words, gestures, or objects. The word comes from the North Germanic verb besvärja, meaning to bewitch or conjure, and its nominal form denotes the act or the utterance itself.

In traditional Scandinavian folk magic, besvärjelser were part of everyday practice alongside herb lore and talismans. A besvärjelse might consist of a short spoken formula, the naming of a power, a protective oath, or a ritual using an amulet, herbs, or a ritual object.
