Common examples include the gains of a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller, such as Kp, Ki, and Kd, but many control systems also rely on state-feedback gains, integral action limits, derivative filters, and feedforward terms. Tuning methods range from manual tuning to systematic approaches like the Ziegler-Nichols or Cohen-Coon methods, relay feedback, and optimization-based techniques such as model predictive control or linear-quadratic regulation. Effective tuning seeks adequate rise time, acceptable overshoot, minimal steady-state error, and good disturbance rejection while maintaining stability.
