Berufsständisch is a German term that refers to a system of professional organization based on estates or guilds. Historically, it described a social structure where professions were grouped into distinct orders, each with its own rights, duties, and internal governance. These professional estates, known as "Stände," were characterized by self-regulation, vocational training requirements, and often, a degree of exclusivity.

The concept of Berufsständisch played a significant role in the economic and social life of many European countries, particularly in the pre-industrial era. It aimed to ensure quality standards, protect members from unfair competition, and provide a framework for professional ethics and social welfare. Membership in a professional estate was often hereditary or dependent on completing a rigorous apprenticeship and examination.
