Bergwesen
Bergwesen is a term used in German-language folklore to denote beings associated with mountains, caves, and mining. The word combines Berg (mountain) and Wesen (being, creature). It refers to a broad set of entities—most commonly dwarfs (Zwerge) and mountain spirits—thought to guard ore, rock, and mineral wealth, and to inhabit mines and caverns in alpine and central European landscapes. Regional traditions place Bergwesen in the Harz, Erzgebirge, Bavarian Alps, Tyrol, and parts of Switzerland and Austria, but the concept also appears in broader German folklore.
