Benzodiazepinabhängigkeit refers to a state of physical and psychological dependence on benzodiazepines, a class of psychoactive drugs. These medications are commonly prescribed for anxiety, insomnia, seizures, and muscle spasms. Dependence can develop relatively quickly, even at therapeutic doses, and is characterized by the body's adaptation to the presence of the drug, leading to withdrawal symptoms upon cessation or dose reduction.

The development of tolerance is a key feature, meaning that over time, higher doses are needed to achieve the same therapeutic effect. Psychological dependence involves a craving for the drug and a belief that it is necessary for coping with stress or daily life. This can lead to compulsive drug-seeking behavior.

Withdrawal from benzodiazepines can be a challenging and sometimes protracted process. Symptoms can vary in severity and duration, and may include rebound anxiety, insomnia, irritability, muscle pain, tremors, nausea, and in severe cases, seizures or psychosis. The severity of withdrawal is often related to the dose, duration of use, and individual factors.

Treatment for benzodiazepine dependence typically involves a gradual tapering of the drug under medical supervision to minimize withdrawal symptoms. This process can be slow and may take weeks, months, or even longer.
