Batdetektorer, or bat detectors, are electronic devices used to detect, record, and analyze the echolocation calls of bats. They are employed by researchers, wildlife managers, and enthusiasts to monitor bat activity, identify species, and study nocturnal behavior in a non-invasive manner.

Most detectors capture ultrasonic calls with a microphone and render the signal for human perception either as sounds or as visual displays, enabling analysis of bat presence and diversity in a given area.

Two common real-time processing approaches are heterodyne and frequency-division detectors. Heterodyne devices mix the incoming call with a local oscillator and produce a tone at the difference frequency, allowing immediate listening. Frequency-division detectors shift the entire ultrasonic signal into the audible range, producing spectra suitable for quick identification but with more limited detail than audio playback.

Time-expansion detectors record short ultrasonic samples and replay them slowed down, preserving the original frequency content for detailed analysis and species identification. Full-spectrum detectors keep the complete ultrasonic waveform and often store the raw audio data on memory cards, enabling high-resolution spectrographic analysis but requiring headphones or speakers for real-time listening.

Applications include ecological monitoring, biodiversity surveys, and roost or emergence studies for conservation planning. Data can be exported for software analysis, creating a data chain from field recording to scientific interpretation.

Users should consider range, microphone quality, battery life, and cost, and follow ethical guidelines to minimize disturbance in sensitive bat habitats.
