Barbastellus

Barbastellus is a genus of bats belonging to the family Vespertilionidae. This genus currently comprises two recognized species: Barbastellus barbastellus and Barbastellus leucomelas. These bats are commonly known as barbastelles or barbastelle bats.

Barbastellus barbastellus, the western barbastelle, is found across Europe and parts of North Africa. Barbastellus leucomelas, the eastern barbastelle, is distributed in parts of the Middle East and Central Asia. Both species are characterized by their distinctive flattened snouts and broad, rounded ears. Their fur is typically dark brown to black.

These bats are nocturnal and primarily insectivorous, feeding on flying insects caught in flight. They inhabit a variety of environments, including forests, woodlands, and sometimes agricultural areas. During the day, they roost in tree hollows, caves, old buildings, and under bark. Barbastelles are known to be relatively sedentary, with individuals often staying within a limited home range.

Reproduction typically involves a single offspring born after a gestation period that can vary depending on the species and location. The conservation status of barbastelle bats varies, with some populations facing threats from habitat loss and fragmentation.
