A BagIt bag has a simple, standardized structure. At the top level there is bagit.txt, which declares the BagIt version and character encoding, and bag-info.txt, which holds descriptive metadata such as title, source, and date. The payload directory contains the data files, while manifest files (such as manifest-sha256.txt) record checksums for the payload. Optional tag manifest files (MANIFEST-*.txt) track the integrity of tag files themselves. The format is designed to be human-readable and straightforward to generate by automation.

BagItbased workflows rely on checksum verification to detect changes during transfer or storage. By recomputing hashes and comparing them to the manifests, recipients can confirm data integrity without relying on a specific transfer protocol. This approach supports preservation planning, reliable exchanges between institutions, and provenance capture, especially when used alongside metadata standards like PREMIS or Dublin Core.

Limitations include a lack of built-in encryption or access controls, potential inefficiency for very large bags, and the need for compatible tooling on both ends. As a packaging approach, BagItbased is often complemented by other preservation metadata practices to ensure durable access over time.
