Backtotop refers to a user interface control that returns users to the top of a page or document. It is commonly implemented as a small floating button or link that remains accessible as content extends beyond the viewport. The term is used broadly to describe any mechanism that provides a quick path to the beginning of the page.

The control typically appears after the user has scrolled a certain distance and may disappear when the user is near the top. Activating it scrolls the page to the top, usually with a smooth scrolling animation to reduce motion discomfort and cognitive effort. Some variants offer keyboard activation or tooltips for additional accessibility.

Implementation commonly involves HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. A simple approach uses an anchor with href="#top" and a top anchor element to anchor the page. Modern implementations often use a fixed-position button that, on click, calls window.scrollTo({ top: 0, behavior: 'smooth' }). CSS handles visibility, positioning, and transition effects, while JavaScript can add logic to show or hide the control based on scroll position.

Accessibility considerations include ensuring the control is keyboard focusable, providing a clear label such as aria-label="Back to top," maintaining high color contrast, and honoring reduced motion preferences. The control should not be announced unnecessarily when not visible and should not interfere with screen readers.

Variants of backtotop include icon-only designs, text labels, or combinations, with common placements at the bottom-right or bottom-left of the viewport. It is widely used on long-form content, documentation, blogs, and product listings to improve navigation and user experience.
