BUNcreatinine, more commonly referred to as the BUN/creatinine ratio, is a combined measure used in clinical practice to help assess kidney function and to interpret abnormalities in blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine levels. BUN reflects the amount of nitrogen in the blood in the form of urea, a waste product produced in the liver from protein metabolism and cleared by the kidneys. Creatinine is a breakdown product of creatine in muscle, produced at a relatively constant rate and freely filtered by the kidneys.
