BATkäytännöt

BATkäytännöt is a Finnish term that translates to "BAT practices" or "BAT methods." It refers to the Best Available Techniques (BAT) that are applied in industrial and other polluting activities to prevent or minimize pollution and its impact on the environment. These practices are based on the most effective and advanced stage of development of activities and their methods of operation, indicating the suitability of techniques for providing the basis for emission limit values and other permit conditions.

The concept of BAT is central to environmental permitting in many European countries, including Finland. It is a dynamic and evolving set of practices, meaning that what is considered BAT today may not be tomorrow as technology advances. The determination of BAT is often carried out through a process of information exchange at the European level, resulting in the publication of BAT Reference Documents (BREFs) for various industrial sectors. These BREFs are then used by national authorities to set permit conditions for individual facilities.

Implementing BATkäytännöt aims to achieve a high level of protection for the environment as a whole. This involves considering not only emissions to air and water but also waste generation, energy consumption, and the use of raw materials. The goal is to find the most environmentally sound and economically viable solutions for reducing environmental impact.
