It is best known for its Avast Antivirus line. The company traces its origins to Alwil Software, founded in 1988 in Czechoslovakia by Eduard Kučera and Pavel Baudiš to combat a computer virus. The Avast brand emerged as the company expanded its antivirus offerings. In 2016 Avast acquired AVG Technologies, and the combined group continued to market products under both brands, with Avast as the leading corporate name.
