Autovastaaineita, known in English as "autoantibodies," are antibodies produced by the immune system that mistakenly target and react with an individual's own tissues or organs. Unlike typical antibodies that defend against external pathogens such as bacteria and viruses, autoantibodies are directed against self-antigens, which are normally harmless components present within the body.

The formation of autoantibodies is a characteristic feature of autoimmune diseases, where the immune system loses its ability to distinguish between self and non-self. These autoantibodies can contribute to tissue damage, inflammation, and the development of clinical symptoms associated with autoimmune conditions. Examples include anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA) in systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid factor in rheumatoid arthritis, and anti-insulin autoantibodies in type 1 diabetes.

The precise mechanisms leading to autoantibody production are not fully understood but involve genetic, environmental, and immunological factors. Faulty immune tolerance, molecular mimicry, and defective regulatory T cell functions are believed to play roles in their development.
