Automaattikivääri

Automaattikivääri is the Finnish term for an assault rifle. An assault rifle is a selective-fire rifle capable of firing in both semi-automatic and fully automatic modes. They are typically chambered for intermediate cartridges, such as the 7.62x39mm or 5.56x45mm NATO, and have a detachable magazine. These firearms are standard issue for many modern armies due to their versatility and firepower.

The development of the assault rifle began in the early 20th century, with significant advancements made during World War II. The StG 44, developed by Germany, is often cited as the first true assault rifle. Its success led to further research and development by other nations, culminating in the widespread adoption of assault rifles after the war. Finnish military doctrine has also incorporated assault rifles for its infantry units.

Automaattikivääri are characterized by their relatively compact size compared to older battle rifles, allowing for better maneuverability in close-quarters combat, while still retaining effective range. The selective-fire capability allows a soldier to choose between firing one round at a time for accuracy and ammunition conservation, or firing continuously for suppressive fire. The design typically includes a pistol grip and a rifle stock, contributing to controllability during automatic fire. Many modern automaattikivääri also feature accessory rails for mounting optics, lights, and other equipment.
