Autoklaavidel, also known as an autoclave, is a specialized piece of laboratory equipment used primarily for sterilization. It operates by exposing items to high-pressure saturated steam, which effectively kills microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores. The process relies on the principle that steam under pressure can reach temperatures significantly higher than the boiling point of water at atmospheric pressure, typically up to 121–134 °C (250–273 °F), depending on the cycle settings.

Autoclaves are widely used in medical, dental, and research laboratories, as well as in industrial settings like food processing and pharmaceutical manufacturing. The device consists of a sealed chamber, a heating element, a pressure gauge, and a safety valve. Items to be sterilized are placed inside the chamber, which is then sealed and pressurized with steam. The high temperature and pressure ensure thorough disinfection, making the autoclave one of the most reliable methods for sterilization.

There are different types of autoclaves, including gravity displacement, prevacuum, and dynamic air removal models. Gravity displacement autoclaves rely on steam displacing air from the chamber, while prevacuum autoclaves first evacuate air before introducing steam, improving efficiency. Dynamic air removal autoclaves use steam injection to physically remove air. Each type has specific applications depending on the load size, material, and sterilization requirements.

Proper use of an autoclave requires adherence to safety protocols, including ensuring the chamber is fully sealed, monitoring pressure and temperature, and following manufacturer guidelines. Improper operation can lead to ineffective sterilization or equipment damage. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning and checking seals, is essential to ensure reliable performance. Autoclaves are a critical tool in maintaining sterile conditions in environments where contamination could compromise safety or results.
