Autentifikavimas is the Lithuanian word for authentication. It refers to the process of verifying the identity of a user, system, or entity. This is a fundamental security measure in computing and is used to ensure that only authorized individuals or systems can access specific resources or perform certain actions. The primary goal of authentication is to prevent unauthorized access and protect sensitive information.

There are several common methods of authentication. The most widespread is password-based authentication, where a user provides a secret password to prove their identity. Another common method is multi-factor authentication (MFA), which requires users to provide two or more verification factors to gain access to a resource. These factors can include something the user knows (like a password), something the user has (like a security token or smartphone), or something the user is (like a fingerprint or facial scan). Biometric authentication uses unique biological characteristics for verification. Token-based authentication involves using special hardware or software tokens that generate temporary codes.

The authentication process typically involves a user presenting credentials to a system, which then compares these credentials against a stored record of valid credentials. If the credentials match, the user is authenticated and granted access. If they do not match, access is denied. Strong authentication mechanisms are crucial for maintaining the security and integrity of digital systems and data.
