AT-AT, short for All Terrain Armored Transport, is a fictional four-legged ground assault walker in the Star Wars universe. It is used by the Galactic Empire for heavy infantry support, armored transport, and breaching fortified positions. In contrast to lighter walkers, the AT-AT is designed to deliver troops and equipment with substantial firepower and protection, though at the cost of speed and maneuverability.

Design and capabilities include a crew that operates the vehicle’s sensors, navigation, and weapons, with troops deployed from integrated bays or rear ramps. Its primary armament typically consists of heavy laser cannons mounted on the head, supported by secondary weapons for defense. The armor is intentionally thick to withstand significant fire, making the AT-AT a formidable obstacle on the battlefield. Its size and weight enable it to traverse varied terrain, from snowfields to rough ground, but its leg configuration and height limit agility and expose it to certain countermeasures.

Operational history and appearances: the AT-AT first gained prominence in The Empire Strikes Back (1980) during the Battle of Hoth, where it demonstrated both the Empire’s strategic power and its vulnerabilities, notably to air support and ground-based countermeasures such as tow cables used by rebel snowspeeders. It subsequently appears in other Star Wars films and expanded media, often as a symbol of Imperial military might and as a platform for infantry deployment and heavy combat.
