Astrophytum

Astrophytum is a genus of cacti, commonly known as "star cacti" due to the star-like shape of their ribbed bodies. These plants are native to Mexico and the southern United States. They are characterized by their slow growth, lack of spines (or very few and small spines), and often attractive, fuzzy patterns of white dots or flecks on their green epidermis. The flowers are typically large, solitary, and funnel-shaped, appearing in shades of yellow, white, or sometimes pink.

Species within the genus Astrophytum are highly prized by succulent and cactus enthusiasts for their unique aesthetics. Common species include Astrophytum asterias, which is almost spherical and has no ribs, Astrophytum myriostigma, known for its prominent ribs and fuzzy patches, and Astrophytum capricorne, which features curved, horn-like spines. These cacti are well-suited to arid environments and require well-draining soil, bright light, and infrequent watering, making them popular choices for container gardening. Their decorative appeal, coupled with their relatively low maintenance requirements, contributes to their enduring popularity in cultivation.
