Asetylaatiomerkinnät, known in English as acetylation marks or acetylation patterns, refer to the specific arrangement and combination of acetyl groups attached to a molecule. While most commonly discussed in the context of histone proteins in epigenetics, the concept can be applied to other molecules where acetylation plays a regulatory role. Histone acetylation involves the addition of an acetyl group (CH3CO-) to a lysine residue on the N-terminal tail of histone proteins. This modification can alter the charge of the histone, thereby affecting its interaction with DNA and influencing gene expression.

The pattern of acetylation across different histone proteins and at specific lysine residues is crucial for determining the accessibility of DNA to the transcriptional machinery.
