Asepalvelus

Asepalvelus is the Finnish term for the mandatory military service carried out in the Finnish Defence Forces by eligible male Finnish citizens. The obligation, known as asevelvollisuus, is part of Finland’s conscription system. In practice, most calls to service occur after a person reaches early adulthood, though the exact timing can depend on medical, educational, and personal circumstances. Women may serve voluntarily in the military, while conscientious objectors may perform civilian service (siviilipalvelus) instead of armed service.

The length and structure of asepalvelus vary by branch and role, but it generally comprises several months of basic training followed by unit-specific instruction.
