Arutese

Arutese is a constructed language created for the Aruta fictional universe. It functions as the native tongue of the Arut people within that setting and is described in accompanying worldbuilding materials and media.

Linguistic profile and structure

Arutese is typically described as an analytic to moderately synthetic language with a subject–verb–object basic word order. It is presented as agglutinative, employing suffixes to mark grammatical relations such as tense, aspect, mood, evidentiality, and case. The language includes inclusive and exclusive distinctions in the first-person plural pronoun, a small set of noun classes rather than grammatical gender, and relatively limited noun–adjective agreement. Nouns do not encode definiteness in the base form; definiteness is expressed via determiners or word order adjustments.

Phonology and writing

The sound system comprises five vowels (a, e, i, o, u) with stress typically landing on the penultimate syllable. Consonants commonly listed include p, t, k, m, n, s, l, r, f, h, along with occasional glides and phonemic palatalizations. Arutese is usually written in a Latin-based alphabet, with diacritics indicating vowel length and stress; digraphs represent certain phonemes in a way familiar to many Western-style orthographies.

Dialects

Two main varieties are described: Northern Arutese and Southern Arutese. They diverge lexically and phonologically in some respects but remain mutually intelligible within the corpus of Arutese materials.
