Arkkimuovaus

Arkkimuovaus is a ceramic and sculpture technique dedicated to shaping clay into arch-shaped forms and relief elements. The term is Finnish, combining a root referring to arches with muovaus, molding. It is used in both standalone sculpture and architectural ceramics, where arches or curved bays are expressed in reliefs and panels.

Technique and materials: Practitioners plan by sketching arch geometries and selecting a suitable clay body (stoneware, porcelain) and firing regime. Arch shapes are built using templates, moulds, coils, slabs, or a combination, often reinforced with internal armatures for stability. After forming, pieces are dried slowly to controlled moisture levels, joined if multiple units are used, then bisque-fired. Surfaces may be smoothed, carved, or scraped before glaze application and final firing. The method emphasizes precise curvature, consistent arch spacing, and clean seams.

Applications and reception: Arkkimuovaus is favored in contemporary ceramic art for its architectural references, modularity, and capacity to create rhythmic, arch-based reliefs. In public art and installations, arch motifs can reference historic arches or natural curves. The approach requires attention to clay shrinkage, warping, and structural joints.
