Apereo

Apereo Foundation, commonly referred to as Apereo, is a global nonprofit organization that supports open-source software for higher education and research. It coordinates development, sustains community-driven projects, and promotes interoperability and shared services across campuses. The organization was established in 2012 from the merger of Jasig and the Sakai Foundation.

Apereo maintains a portfolio of open-source software used by universities and colleges worldwide, including the Central Authentication Service (CAS) for single sign-on, Sakai, a learning management and collaboration platform, and uPortal, a portal framework for campus information systems. The portfolio also includes other campus-facing applications and services that address identity, access management, learning, and information provisioning.

Governance is provided by a member-based board of directors, with strategic direction set by member institutions and affiliate organizations. The foundation supports a collaborative community through mailing lists, wikis, code repositories, and regular meetings, including an annual conference and regional events. It operates under a membership model, funded by dues, sponsorships, and grants, and its software is released under open-source licenses to encourage adoption and contribution.

Apereo seeks to reduce vendor lock-in and enable shared development by thousands of users in higher education and research globally. It collaborates with other standards bodies and education technology initiatives to advance open infrastructure and interoperability across campuses.
