Antropocentrism

Antropocentrism is a philosophical perspective that places humans at the center of moral, ethical, and existential considerations, often treating them as the most significant or valuable entities in the universe. The term derives from the Greek words *anthrōpos* (meaning "human") and *kentron* (meaning "center"). This viewpoint has deep historical roots, particularly in Western thought, where human beings have frequently been regarded as the pinnacle of creation, endowed with unique rationality, free will, and spiritual capacity.

In ethical and environmental contexts, antropocentrism justifies human actions based on their impact on people rather than on non-human entities. For instance, decisions about conservation, resource use, or animal welfare may prioritize human needs, such as food, medicine, or economic benefit, over the intrinsic value of nature or other species. This perspective has been influential in shaping policies, legal frameworks, and cultural norms, though it has also faced criticism for its potential to exploit or disregard non-human life.

Critics argue that antropocentrism can lead to environmental degradation, species extinction, and ethical blind spots, as it may overlook the inherent worth of ecosystems, animals, or future generations. Alternative ethical frameworks, such as biocentrism or ecocentrism, challenge this anthropocentric view by emphasizing the moral consideration of all living beings or entire ecological systems.
