In some linguistics discussions and online forums, it has surfaced as a hypothetical or illustrative coinage to examine how gender is encoded in bureaucratic language. The construction combines the masculine noun Antragsteller with the definite article die, which in German can function as a feminine singular or a plural article, leading to ambiguity and a lack of a clear, inclusive meaning.

In practice, Antragstellerdie is generally regarded as nonstandard or incorrect. German style guides and reference works recommend explicit gender-inclusive formulations when multiple genders are meant. The most common alternatives are Antragstellerinnen und Antragsteller to name female and male applicants, or the gender-neutral term Antragstellende as a plural collective noun.

Examples in usage tend to highlight the problem. A sentence like Die Antragstellerdie müssen Unterlagen einreichen is awkward and unclear, whereas Die Antragstellerinnen und Antragsteller müssen Unterlagen einreichen clearly includes all genders.
