Antifriisiyhdisteet, or antifreeze compounds, are substances added to liquids to lower their freezing point. This is crucial for preventing damage caused by freezing in various applications, most commonly in automotive cooling systems. The most prevalent antifreeze compound used in vehicles is ethylene glycol. When mixed with water, ethylene glycol significantly depresses the freezing point of the solution, preventing the water from turning into ice and expanding, which could crack engine blocks or radiators.

Another common antifreeze compound is propylene glycol. While it shares similar freezing point depression properties with ethylene glycol, it is considered less toxic. This makes propylene glycol a preferred choice in applications where accidental ingestion by humans or animals is a concern, such as in food processing equipment or RV plumbing systems during winterization.

The effectiveness of an antifreeze compound is measured by its concentration in the mixture. Higher concentrations generally lead to lower freezing points, but there are optimal ratios for both freeze protection and boiling point elevation. Antifreeze compounds also often contain corrosion inhibitors to protect metal components within the system from rust and degradation.

Beyond automotive use, antifreeze compounds are utilized in de-icing fluids for aircraft and runways, in HVAC systems to prevent freezing in pipes, and in various industrial processes where low-temperature operation is required. Proper handling and disposal of antifreeze are important due to the potential toxicity of some compounds, particularly ethylene glycol.
