AntiGypsyism

Anti-Gypsyism, also known as Antiziganism, is a specific form of racism directed against Romani people and Sinti people, as well as other groups historically and currently marginalized and identified as "Gypsy." This prejudice manifests in various forms, including discrimination, hate speech, hate crimes, and systemic oppression. It is rooted in centuries of stereotypes, misinformation, and historical persecution that have led to the social exclusion and marginalization of these communities across Europe and beyond.

The term "Gypsy" itself is often considered pejorative by many Romani and Sinti people, who prefer to identify by their specific ethnic group names. However, the term anti-Gypsyism is widely used in academic and activist circles to describe the phenomenon of prejudice and discrimination against these groups, regardless of the terminology used by the perpetrators. This discrimination can be seen in areas such as housing, employment, education, and access to public services. Historical events like the Porajmos, the genocide of Roma and Sinti during the Nazi era, highlight the extreme consequences of anti-Gypsyism. Contemporary manifestations include disproportionate policing, forced evictions, and widespread negative media portrayals. Addressing anti-Gypsyism requires a comprehensive approach that challenges stereotypes, promotes Roma rights, and implements anti-discrimination measures.
