Antiziganism

Antiziganism refers to prejudice, discrimination, and hostility directed towards Romani people and other groups historically referred to as "Gypsies." This term encompasses a wide range of negative attitudes and actions, including stereotypes, scapegoating, and systemic oppression. The roots of antiziganism are deeply embedded in centuries of historical persecution, often fueled by unfounded fears and misconceptions about Romani culture and identity.

Historically, antiziganist sentiments have manifested in various forms, from forced assimilation policies and expulsions to outright violence and genocide. During the Holocaust, Romani people were targeted for extermination by the Nazi regime in what is known as the Porajmos. In contemporary times, antiziganism continues to be a significant issue, leading to social exclusion, economic marginalization, and human rights abuses in many parts of the world.

The stereotypes associated with antiziganism often portray Romani people as inherently criminal, untrustworthy, or nomadic outsiders. These harmful generalizations obscure the diversity within Romani communities and ignore the socio-economic factors that contribute to challenges faced by some members. Combating antiziganism requires addressing these deeply ingrained prejudices through education, promoting accurate representation, and implementing legal protections to ensure the rights and dignity of Romani people are respected.
