Anterogradinen

Anterogradinen is a Finnish adjective meaning “anterograde,” and it is used in several scientific contexts to describe directional movement or processes that proceed away from a starting point.

In biology and neuroscience, anterograde transport refers to the movement of molecules and organelles from a neuron's cell body toward its axon terminals, along microtubules and powered by kinesin motors. This directional transport supplies synaptic vesicles, mitochondria, and membrane proteins to nerve endings and is essential for synaptic function and neuronal maintenance. Its counterpart is retrogradinen transport, which moves materials toward the cell body and is driven by dynein motors.

Anterograde amnesia, or anterogradinen amnesia in some Finnish texts, denotes a condition in which a person cannot form new long-term memories after a brain injury or disease, while previously acquired memories may remain intact. Short-term memory can be preserved, and some types of learning, particularly procedural skills, can be partially retained. Causes include damage to the hippocampus and surrounding medial temporal structures, traumatic brain injury, stroke, or certain neurological disorders. The condition is contrasted with retrograde amnesia, where earlier memories are lost.

In Finnish scientific usage, the term also appears in methods such as anterograde tracing in neuroanatomy, where tracers move from neuron cell bodies toward their projection targets, helping map neural circuits.
