Anonimeerimine

Anonimeerimine, or anonymization, is the process of transforming personal data so that individuals cannot be identified from the data alone or when combined with readily available information. The aim is to enable data use for analysis, research, or statistical purposes while protecting privacy. Anonimeerimine is distinct from pseudonymization, where identifiers are replaced with pseudonyms but could be re-identified with additional data.

Techniques used in anonymization range from data masking and generalization to suppression and perturbation. More formal approaches include k-anonymity, which makes each record indistinguishable from at least k-1 others with respect to identifying attributes; as well as extensions such as l-diversity and t-closeness to address attribute diversity. Differential privacy introduces random noise to results in a way that bounds the risk of any single individual's data being inferred from published outputs.

Applications of anonymization are widespread in statistics, public health research, government data releases, and business analytics. Proper anonymization can improve compliance with privacy laws and ethical standards, but often comes with a trade-off: reduced data granularity and utility, especially when many identifying attributes or rare combinations are present.

Risks include the possibility of re-identification through linkage with external data sources. Therefore, anonymization should be accompanied by systematic risk assessment, governance, and appropriate data-sharing agreements. In the European Union, GDPR draws a line between data that are truly anonymized (and thus not subject to protection rules) and data that remain pseudonymous (and still regulated). Ongoing research in anonymization seeks to enhance privacy protection while preserving data usefulness, including advanced privacy models and robust evaluation methods.
