Anodiseerimisel, also known as anodization, is an electrochemical process used to increase the thickness of the natural oxide layer on the surface of metal parts. It is most commonly applied to aluminum, but can also be used for titanium, magnesium, tantalum, and other metals. The process involves immersing the metal part in an electrolytic solution, typically sulfuric acid, and passing an electric current through it. The metal part acts as the anode, and the oxygen ions produced in the electrolyte combine with the metal atoms to form a thicker, more durable oxide layer.

The resulting oxide layer is integral to the metal substrate, meaning it is not a coating applied to the surface, but rather an extension of the metal itself. This layer is significantly harder and more resistant to corrosion and wear than the original metal surface. Anodized surfaces can also be dyed in a wide range of colors by introducing coloring agents into the electrolyte or by post-treatment dyeing. This makes anodizing a popular choice for decorative applications in addition to its functional benefits. The thickness and properties of the oxide layer can be controlled by adjusting the process parameters such as current density, temperature, and electrolyte concentration. Anodized parts are commonly found in aerospace components, automotive parts, architectural elements, consumer electronics, and cookware due to their enhanced durability and aesthetic appeal.
