Andningsröst

Andningsröst, meaning "breath voice" in Swedish, refers to a vocal quality characterized by audible exhalation during speech. It is not a distinct vocal disorder but rather a perceptible leakage of air as sound is produced. This can manifest in various ways, such as a breathy tone, a whispering quality, or a noticeable hissing sound accompanying the spoken words.

The presence of andningsröst can stem from several factors. It may be related to inadequate breath support, where the airflow from the lungs is not effectively controlled or utilized to produce a consistent and full vocal sound. Muscle tension, particularly in the laryngeal area, can also contribute by restricting the vocal folds' ability to fully adduct (close) during phonation, leading to air escaping. In some instances, andningsröst might be a conscious stylistic choice for expressive purposes, though it is more commonly an unintentional vocal habit.

Individuals experiencing andningsröst may find their voice sounds weak, fatigued easily, or lacks projection. While not always indicative of pathology, persistent or bothersome andningsröst can be addressed through vocal training. Speech-language pathologists can help identify the underlying causes and implement techniques to improve breath management, vocal fold closure, and overall vocal efficiency. The goal of intervention is to achieve a clearer, more resonant, and less breathy vocal production.
